Earvel Fraley, a former justice of the peace, announced his intention to r un for Washington County judge in 2008.
Fraley, a Republican, served on the Quorum Court for three ter ms from 1997 to 2003. He announced his candidacy for judge at a meeting of the Washington County Republican Party this week.
Justice of the Peace Joe Patterson said hes been trying to convince Fraley to run for some time. Fraley could not be reached for comment Thursday.
He will run against state Rep. Marilyn Edwards. Edwards announced in August that she will r un as the Democratic candidate for county judge. Edwards served as the Washington County clerk for 26 years before serving three terms in the state House of Representatives, representing District 88.
County Judge Jerry Hunton said he is not going to get involved in the race for his successor but will be willing to help whoever gets elected during the transition period.
Also announcing his candidacy at the Republican committee meeting was David Quin, who will run for the District 2 seat on the Quorum Court against JP Micah Neal.
Quin, who lives in Springdale, served on the court briefly in 2002 when he was appointed in April of that year by then Gov. Mike Huckabee to complete the term of Ron Clark, who resigned. His term ended in December 2002, and Neal was elected.
Quin works at the Cracker Barrel in Springdale.
Hunton said his impression of Quin from his short term on the court is that he is conservative, reserved and respectful.
Neal said he intends to defend his seat next year and run for a fourth term.
I feel like Ive represented the city of Springdale well, he said.
Neal said he would like to continue to serve on the court to see some of the current challenges met.
We have a lot of challenges in the near future and decisions were going to have to make, he said. I want to be a part of that.
